Roby

In loving memory Edgar Franklin Carter “Chick” June 17, 1936 - January 10, 2021

Edgar Franklin Carter was born on June 17, 1936 in Roby, Texas to Edd & Lucille Carter. His great-grandfather always called him “his little chick-a-dee” which is why we all only know him as “Chick”. Safe to say his nickname did not come from his love for chicken! Even VISA only knows him as Chick Carter…. Chick grew up and went to school in Roby, Texas. While attending Tarleton State University, he met Jane Bennett. They married in August of 1956 and were married for 50 years until her death in April of 2007. Chick could talk to anyone and made everyone his friend. This, amazing skill of communication, served him well in his chosen career of sales. Honestly, he never met a stranger. He retired from M&N Metals Company several times…he just couldn’t quit working…finally ending his career in 2018. Chick and Jane lived mostly in Odessa, where they raised their children Victoria & Bennett. They were members of Antioch Christian Church. Later in life, while living in the family home in Roby, they were members of First Baptist Church. When Chick wasn’t traveling for work or in Odessa with his family, you could always find him at the farm in Roby with his cows. In fact, most family members recall hearing about his favorite bull, Muley, and grew up knowing what it meant to “work the cows”! Chick married Sherry Upshaw in 2011 and enjoyed becoming part of another large family. They lived in Abilene for many years and were members of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Chick Carter is survived by his daughter, Victoria Greer of College Station and his son, Bennett Carter & wife, Leah of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Cole Carter & wife, Lauren Carter of Arlington, Lexi Carter Koonce & husband, Andy Koonce of Dallas, & Gage Greer of College Station; great grandchildren, Beckett & Adeline Carter of Arlington. Chick is survived by his wife Sherry Upshaw Carter of Abilene and her family. Chick is preceded in death by his beloved Mother & Father, his brothers, Harold, Neil & Billy Carter, and his wife Jane Carter.
