Freddie Max Stuart, a devoted family man, respected educator, and pillar of the Roby community, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026. Born on February 24, 1937, in his parents’ home in Fisher County to Max and Lorene Stuart, Freddie’s life was marked by dedication, achievement, and a deep connection to his hometown.
Freddie’s early years were characterized by remarkable athletic and agricultural accomplishments. Known affectionately as "Sheep Boy" for winning the two largest market lamb shows in Texas—San Antonio and Houston—he demonstrated a youthful passion and talent that would carry into his academic and professional pursuits. Graduating from Roby High School in 1955, Freddie excelled in athletics, qualifying for the state UIL in the long jump and earning a scholarship to Howard Junior College. There, he met the love of his life, LoVelle Fletcher Stuart, whom he married in 1958 while attending North Texas, where he also tied the 220 low hurdles record with a time of 24.2 seconds, a record that stood until the retirement of the event.
Following his academic success, which included completing a master’s degree, Freddie embraced a career dedicated to education and community service. He worked as a teacher and coach at Crane ISD before returning to Roby as the high school principal and coach, roles he fulfilled with commitment until transitioning to his farming career. Freddie built a Hereford operation that he was very proud of. His professional life was deeply entwined with the Roby school system, a legacy shared by his family—his wife served for 31 years, both daughters-in-law retired from Roby schools, and two granddaughters and a grandson-in-law taught and coached there. His two sons, Brad and Britt Stuart, are proud graduates of Roby High School, as are all his grandchildren, and his nine great-grandchildren have attended there, signifying a multigenerational bond with the community. Freddie attended all sporting, 4-H, and other activities that his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in as long as his health permitted.
Freddie’s service extended beyond education into steadfast involvement in faith and civic duties. He served for many years as an elder at the Roby Church of Christ and played an influential role on various boards within Fisher County. Notably, he was a founding board member of the Heritage House, a facility he called home for the last three years of his life. His leadership and dedication helped establish this community resource, reflecting his lifelong commitment to the well-being of others.
Freddie’s personal life was equally rich. He shared 64 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary LoVelle Stuart, until her passing in 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Lorene Stuart, and his sister, Gloria Lou Posey. He is survived by his two sons, Brad Stuart and his wife Glenna of Roby, and Britt Stuart and his wife Lisa of Roby; six cherished grandchildren—Lyndi and Casey Boone of Eula, Shane and Shannon Stuart of Sylvester, Hunter Stuart of Roby, Brittini and Ryan Cronkright of Blackwell, Shali and Erik Alaniz of Roby, and Danci and Chad Dennis of Roby—and nine great-grandchildren: Rylie, Presli, Paisli, Chloe, Piper, Menley, Swazey, Mesa, and Whitt.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff and residents of the Heritage House for the exceptional care and friendship provided over the past three years, as well as to Dr. Kevin Kelly and the dedicated team at Fisher County Hospital.
A visitation will be held on June 3, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Roby Church of Christ. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Roby Church of Christ or Roby Cemetery at the First Financial Bank of Roby.
Freddie Max Stuart’s life stands as a testament to the power of devotion—to family, community, faith, and education. His legacy endures through those he loved and served so deeply, and he will be remembered with profound respect and gratitude by all who had the honor to know him.
