George Velez

George "Yogi" Louis Velez, 62, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Rosary will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018, from 6-7pm at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral home in Rotan. Visitation will follow from 7-8pm. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, September 24, 2018, at 10am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rotan.
George was born in Rotan, Texas on April 29, 1956, to Frank and Petra Velez. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home to Rotan, he married Angel (Morales) Velez on July 26th, 1976. George was employed by National Gypsum and worked there until his retirement in 2015. George and Angel had two kids, Adriana and Rebecca Velez.
George was an avid vegetable gardener and enjoyed hogging the TV remote from his family. His pride and joy was his custom-built roadster. He loved spending time with his two grandsons, Benjamin and Mateo; and could often be found driving Benjamin around Rotan in their golf cart.
George is survived by his wife, Angel Velez; two daughters, Adriana and husband, Adam Velasquez of Abilene and Rebecca Velez of Lubbock; sister Sylvia Morales of Sweetwater; brother Johnny Velez of Chicago, IL; grandsons, Benjamin and Mateo Velasquez; sister-in-laws, Trena Morales of Rotan and Sandra and husband Felix Garcia of Abilene; brother-in-laws Robert and wife Jana Morales of Rotan and Manuel Guzman of Odessa; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Petra Velez; sister, Mickey Carrillo; and dogs, Winchester and Savage.
