James Weathersbee

JAMES DOUGLAS "DOUG" WEATHERSBEE, 82, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016, in a Lubbock hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the First Baptist Church of Rotan, with burial following at Belvieu Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2016, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.

Doug was born December 7, 1933 in Rotan, Tx to the late O.D. and Velma (Boyd) Weathersbee. He graduated with the Rotan High School class of 1952 and received a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Baylor University in 1956. He remained a lifelong fan of the Rotan Yellowhammers and the Baylor Bears. On July 31, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart Shirley Ann Dry. He served 2 years as a pilot for the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. Following the Air Force, Doug attended the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science before returning home to join the family business of Weathersbee Funeral Home. He would later co-own the funeral home with his brother, Mac Weathersbee, for 40 years before retiring in 1999.

Doug loved his family and enjoyed their gatherings. His hobbies were golf, traveling, and flying. He was a Trustee for many years at First Baptist Church where he was a lifelong member. Doug was a member of the Rotan Flying Club, the Rotan Golf Club, and the Texas Funeral Directors Association.

Doug is preceeded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Mac and Carolyn Weathersbee, his son-in-law, Tom Allen, and his great-grandson, Pistol Posey.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Weathersbee; five children, Alan and Renee Weathersbee of Rotan, Patti Allen of Rotan, Raymond and Carmen Weathersbee of Holliday, Ronnie and Cindy Green of Rotan, and Joe and Pam Shirley of Plainview. His grandchildren are Wade Weathersee and wife Kim, Leighan James and husband Ross, Morgan Henderson, Haley Cumbie and husband Rowdy, Julie Lange, Dustin Weathersbee and wife Veronica, Brandi Weathersbee, Tracy Lambaren and husband Larry, Ryan Posey and wife Laura, Kayla Gonzalez and husband Frankie, Drew Shirley and wife Mandee, Blake Shirley, Katie Schafer and husband Daniel. He has 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
