John was born October 13, 1935, in Roby Texas to Kater Frank Price and Eunice Viola Mae Nichols Price. He was one of five children and was raised in Longworth, Texas. As a young man he went to work for the Mashed O Ranch. He later worked for the Pitchfork Ranch. While working at the Pitchfork Ranch, a friend set him up on a blind date and that’s when he met the love of his life. Two years later they were wed on August 29, 1959, and moved to Lubbock, Texas. Shortly after he put himself through barber school. During this time, they had their first child. After completion of barber school, they moved to Rotan, Texas, where he went to work for Barney Bigham. He worked there until he bought the shop. During this time, they welcomed their second child. John was a barber in Rotan for 45 years, where he was known as “Barber John.” He was honest, hardworking, and respected. People would travel from many counties to have him cut their hair. In 1973, they added in the Boot Repair Shop next door where Jo worked beside him for 26 years. After retiring from barbering, he continued to tinker with anything that anyone would bring him to work on.
John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, JoNell Smith Price; daughter, Kathy Bischoff; and son Johnny (Beverly) Price. Six grandchildren, Jason (Amy) Stamm, Scott (Emily) McKinney, Jesse (Maria) Price, Krystle (Charlie) Hall, Jessica Price, and Kimberly Price.
