Melba Mccall

Melba June (Matney) McCall, 95 of Rotan, passed away June 18, 2023. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, June 24 , 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Rotan, Texas with burial to follow in Belvieu Cemetery. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 10:00 am at the church. Services are under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.

Melba was born in Palo Pinto County, near Lipan, Texas on August 8, 1927, to the late Virgil E. and Jimmie (St. Clair) Matney. After receiving her teaching certificate in Weatherford College, Melba moved to Rotan with her lifelong friend, Mayrene Morrow, to begin her teaching career in 1946. There she met and married Charles F. McCall II on April 17, 1948. She later received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Hardin Simmons University. Melba taught in the Rotan schools for thirty-six years before retiring to care for her husband. She was a member of the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a teacher’s organization. Melba was also a member of First Baptist Church of Rotan.

These are Melba’s own words concerning her hobbies and activities: “I love my family, friends, teaching and reading, and studying the Bible. I enjoy working in my yard, making baby quilts, cooking, and embroidery. My greatest joy is having my family all together, along with keeping my grandchildren.”

Melba was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles McCall; two sons; Charles McCall Jr. and Jack McCall; and one sister, Elizabeth.

She is survived by one son, Stephen McCall; one brother, Vaughn Matney; one sister, Shirley Holt; as well as one daughter-in-law, Brenda McCall.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Michael McCall, Katie Schneider and husband Craig, Brooke Dora and husband Tommy, Tyler McCall and wife Jessica, Jessica Harrison and husband Jacob, Mark McCall and wife Chelsey, Justin McCall, and Lauren Sageser and husband Jay Ray; and twelve great grandchildren, Holliday, Levi, Stetson, Chloe, Dax, Jackson S., Ellie, Jackson M., Channing, Carty, Jax, Jett and two babies on the way; also many nieces and nephews.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Rotan or the West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
