Violet Upshaw

VIOLET JIM (HARGROVE) UPSHAW, 86, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2015, in Sweetwater. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of Roby, with burial following at the Roby Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Born September 28, 1928, in Rotan, Texas, Violet was the daughter of William and Myrtle Lee (Holder) Hargrove. Violet graduated from Rotan High School at the age of 16, and entered Drauwns Business College at the age of 17. She married the love of her life, Glen Upshaw, on February 28, 1946, following his service in the Army. Violet served as the Roby postmistress from 1970-1992, and was part of the Fisher County Historical Society, a member of the Fisher County Sheriff's posse, a member of the Fisher County RV Club, and a card carrying supporter of the Roby Lions Club. She also managed the War Veterans Memorial. Violet taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church of Roby for over 50 years, and travelled all over the United States with the Southern Baptist Convention Church Builders. She was a lifelong resident of Fisher County, except for two years in Colorado and two years in Denver City.
Violet is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Glenn Upshaw; her sister, Beverly Jane (Hargrove) Mason; and her brother, Joe Mack Hargrove.
She is survived by two sons, Randall Lane Upshaw and his wife, Mary, and Sherwin Douglas Upshaw; two sisters. Carol Hargrove Justiss and Joyce Hargrove Smith; six grandchildren, Brian Jarrett Upshaw, Brandon Miles Upshaw and his wife, Meredith, Ross Hunter Upshaw and his wife, Amanda, Meagan Nicole Upshaw Mumme and her husband, J.B., Justin Fisher Upshaw and his wife, Emily, and Christopher Ray Smith and his wife, Serena; and nine great-grandchildren, Meredith Jean Upshaw, Dylan Hunter Upshaw, Addison Christine Upshaw, William Glenn Upshaw, Caydence Joy Smith, Emma Brooke Upshaw, Madeline Violet Upshaw, Caeson Ray Smith, and Colton Walker Upshaw.
