Bertha Lee (Johnson) Carr

May 23, 1929 ~ September 18, 2022 (age 93)


Bertha Lee (Johnson) Carr passed away from natural causes on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at 93 years of age.  Services will be 10:00 am on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the Methodist Church in Rotan, Texas with burial to follow in Belvieu Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.

Born on May 23, 1929 in Vernon, Texas, Bertha was the daughter of John Henry Johnson and Ora Mae Johnson. She was raised by her father after her mother passed away when Bertha was only eight years old. They lived in Lubbock, Texas with her grandmother, Ada Thomas and four siblings. Bertha moved to Rotan in 1948, and married Columbus Carr Jr. in 1949. They had seven children, Curtis, Columbus III, Arthur, Marilyn, Billy Ray, Linda, and Jerry.

Bertha was a member of the Little Zion Baptist Church of Rotan, Texas and became a member of the Four-Square Church in Rotan until she moved to Sweetwater to be closer to family. There she was a member of the Greater Zion Baptist Church until her death. She loved her pastor and each of her church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Columbus Carr Jr.; sons, Curtis Carr, Columbus Carr III, Jerry Wayne Carr, and Billy Ray Carr; sisters, Helen Golston, and Ruthie Johnson; and brothers, Isiah Johnson and William Johnson.

Bertha is survived by children, Arthur Lee Carr and wife, Marye, Marilyn F. Carr, Linda Huitt and husband, Thornton; God daughters, Remona Pearson Bethany, and Regina Pearson Jones; thirty-two grandchildren; fifty-eight great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins that love and will miss her tremendously.
